Choosing Furniture For Your Home
Furniture is a broad term for items that support human activities such as seating (chairs, stools and sofas), eating or working (tables and desks), sleeping, or storage. It can also be a decorative and/or ceremonial item. It can be made of wood, metal, glass, plastics, and/or fabrics. Its form varies widely, from simple pine chests and stick-back country chairs to the elaborate marquetry work and gilded console tables of luxury homes. The design of furniture is often influenced by cultural and social factors.
In the beginning, furniture was functional, making the most of space in a home or workshop. It was adapted to changing needs over time, as people accumulated possessions and grew to value them. It was also a form of expression as people created and re-created their personal style, as evidenced by the different styles of chair backs and legs that appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Choosing furniture for your home is a big decision and should never be taken lightly. Take the time to understand your own style and how it will complement the other elements in your home. Also, remember to always consider space – the size of your room and its doorways (there’s no point in buying a new couch that won’t fit through your front door!). Finally, it is always a good idea to try out a piece of furniture before you buy it. A sofa that looks subtle mauve on your computer screen may turn out to be a much hotter pink in person!
