What is News?
News is information about an event that has just occurred or that is happening. It may be reported by a newspaper, magazine or on television. It can also be a story that has been sent by email or posted to social media. News is important because it informs people about what is going on in their community, country or the world. It can also give them a perspective that they might not have had before.
The classic definition of news is “Dog bites man” but the things that are considered to be newsworthy will vary from society to society. In general, though, it will be what is unusual or unexpected that is newsworthy. If a person wakes up, has breakfast and takes the bus to work, it is not newsworthy; however, if that same person has been attacked by an insect which is invading their crops, then that is certainly newsworthy.
While news has a serious role to play in society, it can also provide a form of entertainment and leisure through celebrity stories, entertainment events or cultural coverage. It can also act as a watchdog by uncovering corruption and wrongdoing.
If you want to keep up with the latest in News, it is recommended that you find a relatively unbiased source such as the BBC or PBS News. Alternatively, you can use a news aggregator site which collects reports from various different sources and presents them to you in one place.
